On defining ‘fundamentalism’

Abstract This article combines two things: it explores how one should undertake the project of defining ‘fundamentalism’ and, based on ensuing desiderata, actually provides such a definition. After few preliminary comments and value it, five goals definitions are distinguished elucidated: accuracy, precision, fairness, clarity, fecundity. that, various kinds their interrelations spelled out. Finally, author defends so-called explicative definition both in terms necessary sufficient conditions stereotypical properties. On basis empirical literature scoping review, is argued that movement fundamentalist if only (i) reactionary towards modern developments, (ii) itself modern, (iii) grand historical narrative. More specifically, exemplifies large number following properties: its rejection liberal ethics, science, or technological exploitation; seeking certainty control, embracing literalism infallibility about particular scriptures, actively using media technology, making universal claims; presents narrative paradise, fall, redemption, cosmic dualism.
